Appearance
acrobat antDistinctive heart-shaped abdomen when viewed from above. 1/8- to 1/4-inch; black, dark brown, or red and black.
Habitat
Like carpenter ants, acrobat ants prefer to nest in moist or rotting wood. Colonies are often found in tree holes, dead limbs, and rotting areas in fences, decks, and railings. Indoors, nests may be located in areas with water damage, such as decayed or damp wood, or inside insulation wall panels and wall voids.
Diet
Acrobat ants feed on a variety of food, but the workers are particularly fond of the sweet "honeydew" produced by aphids, scales, and mealybugs. Most indoor acrobat ant problems arise when workers are searching for food.
Control
Finding and treating the wood where their colonies are located is key to successful acrobat ant control. If the nest is located high up in a tree and inaccessible to direct treatment, limiting the trails that lead to your building’s interior is critical. Seal cracks and crevices in the foundation and walls, repair water leaks, and allow moist wood to dry out.
